The Savings
If you have no loft insulation and you install the recommended 270mm depth you could save between £180 and £220 per. year on your heating bills and nearly 1.5 tonnes of CO2. If your loft requires topping up to the recommended 270mm depth, you could save up to £200 per. year and 400Kg of CO2. These figures are provided by The Energy Saving Trust and are based on an average size property heated by gas. Greater savings can be made in larger properties or those heated by coal or electricity.
Grants For Cavity Wall & Loft Insulation
There are two main types of grant available to homeowners and private tenants. 100% grants cover the full cost of insulation measures. Partial grants can cover up to 50% of the cost. In both cases, grants are arranged by insulation installers and they do not have to be paid back.
100% Grants
In most areas of the UK, grants are available to households where any person living in the house is in receipt of certain benefits, credits or allowances. This is known as 'Priority Group Funding' because the government and utility companies consider these householders to be a priority. Qualifying benefits include:
Partial Grants
If you do not qualify for a 100% grant, you will still qualify for a heavily discounted insulation grant. All homeowners or private tenants are eligible. This is known as 'Able to Pay Funding'. Householders will have to pay a small contribution towards the cost but this is typically recovered within 2 years from the savings made on heating bills.
